VERDI GIUSEPPE: (1813-1901) Italian Composer. A very fine, rare A.M.Q.S., G Verdi, one page, small 8vo, London, 23rd July 1855. In bold, dark ink the composer has attractively penned three bars of music which he identifies at the head as being from his opera Les vepres siciliennes (1855). Immediately beneath the quotation he has added the words, 'La brise souffle au loin plus legereet plus' thus identifying the quotation as being from the opening of Henri's Aria in Act IV. Boldly signed and dated by Verdi beneath the quotation. Professionally matted beneath an engraving of the young Verdi in a head and shoulders pose and framed and glazed in a gold coloured frame to an overall size of 9 x 14. Affixed to the verso of the frame is a small red leather and gilt label indicating that the quotation was originally contained in the library of Arturo Toscanini (1867-1957) Italian Conductor. VG

Les vepres siciliennes, an opera in five acts by Verdi, received its premiere at the Paris Opera on 13th June 1855, just six weeks before this quotation was penned. At the premiere the role of Henri was sung by the French tenor Louis Gueymard (1822-1880).
