BRAHMS JOHANNES: (1833-1897) German Composer. Very fine A.M.Q.S., Johs. Brahms, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. At the head of the page the composer has boldly penned a musical quote from his Neue Liebeslieder Op.65 (1869-74, New Love Songs) with the words 'Nun, ihr Musen genung!' beneath, thus identifying the quote as being from the fifteenth song, Zum Schluss, which was the only one of the series written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The words beneath the quotation translate into English as 'Enough, now Muses!' and immediately following this Brahms has penned a sentiment, in German, 'And I know nothing but this plea: may you remain forever fond of your...' before signing his name. Rare in this form. EX

Neue Liebeslieder is a collection of Romantic pieces written for four solo voices and four hands on the piano, composed by Brahms during the romantic period 1869-74. The final song in the cycle, from which this quotation originates, moves away from the subject of lovers and puts the spotlight on the muses and thanks them for inspiring not only the author Goethe, but also all of the artists in the world.
